How to Customise Your Flute

Embouchure

There are 3 different embouchure hole styles available.

Rounded rectangle embouchure holes are known for being the most loud and powerful and are often regarded as being easy to play. This embouchure style also tends to suit those who play metal Boehm flutes and is a more modern design of hole.

Ellipse embouchure holes tend to add a little more darkness, texture and focus to the sound at the cost of not being able to go quite as loud. These embouchure holes are common on Irish flutes and are an older style of embouchure hole.

“Two Semi Circle” embouchure holes function as an in between on the two former styles, having some curve of the Ellipse, but a straighter edge more reminiscent of the Rounded Rectangle. This embouchure hole acts as an intermediary in volume and power between the other styles.

All of my embouchure holes are free blowing and easy to play.

Finish

Options of finishes are based on glazes available. There is also the new option of strawfire*, a lacquer based finish where finished flutes are wrapped in straw and fired, burning in colours onto the ceramic. Due to the unpredictable and volatile nature of glaze firing and strawfire flutes, please be aware that the final product may not look quite like the picture you see here. If there is a finish you’ve seen on any other of my flutes not listed here, or if you have a specific colour in mind then get in touch! What you want may be able to be arranged.

* As strawfire is lacquer based, please avoid purchasing this finish if you may have allergies to any lacquer, varnish or oil products

** Please note that all custom flutes are made to order and incur a waiting period while the flute is being made
